In large and small classes, the discussion board and the automatic quiz grading option in D2L can be used in ways that promote critical thinking and engagement with texts. Particularly, the discussion board can be used to encourage student interaction and peer instruction outside of the scheduled class time, while the quiz function can ensure that students keep up with readings. The latter can also be used as a diagnostic tool for reading comprehension. The presenter will explore both of these aspects of D2L and how they can be applied to Humanities classes.

A follow-up to last year’s session, this presentation will focus on practical strategies for instruction when teaching large classes.

Everyone has heard of Google as a popular search engine, but Google has many other features that can be used in education that encourage collaboration, organization, and research. This presentation will introduce different Google apps, including iGoogle, Google docs, Google calendar, Google alerts, Google chrome, Google scholar, and many more.

This session, which is designed for any faculty member looking to find effective ways for evaluating student writing, will focus on developing rubrics. Presenters will share their own rubrics as well as ideas for both faculty-driven and student-driven rubric development.

This WIMBA session, which introduces the SRU archives, offers ideas for faculty and their students to incorporate primary and secondary sources into research.

This session will introduce attendees to some of the instructional benefits of using an interactive whiteboard in the classroom. The context of this session will revolve around the notion that many of SRU’s current student body, who are education majors, are already familiar with this technology since the College of Education has begun rather recently an exploration of ways to help prepare our teacher candidates to effectively use this technology in the Pre K-12 classroom during field experiences and beyond. This session is designed for anyone who is curious about how to use an interactive whiteboard in their own classrooms.

Traditionally the culture surrounding distance education at SRU Department of Nursing has evolved through word documents, PowerPoint’s and assigned readings/assignments. Today using Sonic Foundry and Wimba students are enjoying face to face lectures perceived as private educational sessions. This presentation will share lessons learned in using Wimba and Sonic Foundry from a student’s perspective.
